Each member of the group is given a copy of the handout below
(Group discussion will be aided if groups have a sheet of flipchart paper on which they can draw a larger copy of the diagram)
Each member can either work individually before discussion, or the exercise can be carried out as a small group discussion.
Mark the letter representing each issue listed at the appropriate point on the graph.
Note the 2 axes – the scale is intended to give an opportunity to reflect on
(i) The relative weight individuals give to different issues – and are marked on a subjective scale from 0 (not important at all) to 10 (very important).
(ii)The extent to which issues raise practical and pragmatic issues and the extent these are theological.
(a) Only a man can adequately represent Christ the Son and God the Father
(b) Paul argues that the important thing is for the gospel to be preached (1 Cor 9:11-23). To forbid women leadership or preaching roles would be to violate Paul’s principle and hinder evangelism.
(c) St Paul says women should not exercise leadership over men (1 Tim 2)
(d) Opinion polls show there is widespread popular support for the idea of women bishops in England.
(e) Some other Anglican provinces have women bishops (although many do not).
(f) The ordination of women as bishops is required to give credibility to the Church’s proclamation of the gospel in today’s society.
